MCTF OPENS UP AT JC/WATA 2012

FIELD EVENTS STEP UP

Welcome back and all the best for the new year. MCTF opened up its development season with a number of strong performances at the JC/WATA Invitational last Saturday. Of particular note, four Class I athletes finished in the top 10 of the 100m and three in the long jump. Ifeanyi Otuonye (left) had a good showing in both the Class I 100m and long jump placing third (10.91) in the former and 2nd on countback (7.02m) in the latter. Delano Williams won the Class I 100m (10.72), Rajiv Lewis the Class III 800m (2:15.73) and Emmanuel Onyia the Men's Shot Put Open (16.18m; 16lb ball).

Next week will see split squads going to Kirkvine/JAAA in Manchester and the Douglas Forrest Invitational in Kingston.

Munro College and STETHS retain Cross-country titles

ALBERT TOWN, Trelawny - Munro College and St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) girls retained the County of Cornwall Athletics Association's (COCAA) Cross-country titles after dominating the event held at Albert Town High last Thursday.
STETHS swept all three girls races in the Under 14, Under 16 and Under 19 sections, while Munro College won just one of the three boys races.

Nickeisa Williams won the Under 19 5kilo race ahead of Petersfield's Asaine Hall with another STETHS athlete, CARIFTA Games hurdles medalist Kimone Green taking third.
STETHS runners swept the top three places in the Under 16 4Kilo race with CARIFTA Games middle distance medalist Alethia McLaughlin winning ahead of Chantal Smith and Ackeliah Robertson in third place.

Kerry Scott won the Under 14 3Kilo race ahead of team mate Kayceann Plummer with Lewisville's Tasha Daley third.

Munro College's Herbert Thomas won the Under 19 boys 6Kilo race beating STETHS' Dwayne Hibbert while another Munro runner Jason Lewis was third.

Petersfield's Tion Grey won the Under 16 5Kilo race ahead of Albert Town's Avril Lemard and Petersfield's Javel Myrie. The Under 14 4Kilo race was won by Jauvaney James of STETHS ahead of teammates Shemar Salmon and Elijah Ffrench.

The Cross Country was the first event on the 2011/2012 track and field calendar that will continue early January with several track meets including the First Chance Meet to be staged by Irwin High.

WEST CHAMPS 2011 - A FOURPEAT!!!

CONFIDENCE ENTRENCHED

Munro College sternly defended its hold on the COCAA Western Athletics Championships last Saturday. The win made it four Championships in a row after a seven year dearth leading up to the 2006 - 2007 season. We now believe that confidence is firmly entrenched in the culture and fabric of Munro College Track and Field. It took time but there was little if anything this team felt it could not achieve last weekend. The records were abundant and the spirit of victory within the camp was more resolute and apparent than ever before. Case in point, Class One jumper turned sprinter Ifeanyi Otuonye. With Adam Cummings out of the long jump Otuonye, who was not listed for the event, stepped in and stepped up at the last minute to make the final. Instructed to expend little energy between sprint relay obligations he took a single jump to

win the title with 6.98m. Enter young Anthony Bailey, who showed up for the Class II long jump with season and personal bests of nowhere near 6m. On the day, Bailey stepped up and won his first ever title with a leap of 6.48m. Confidence permeated the camp and perhaps its primary catalyst was the double sprint performance of first year one Delano Williams (below right). Two days before during the semis Williams was beaten in the 100 by an ebullient Andrew Fisher of STETHS. Fisher, the defending Champion, put on a show on his home ground with a 10.40 clocking leaving the calculated Williams in second with 10.75. Saturday's final was easily the most anticipated race of the day, not that our team's fortunes hung in the balance but a win here would send the navy and gold flags soaring. The evidence is below. Williams runs out of lane 2.

In the 200m the expectations were less tenuous as Williams entered as the overwhelming favourite. Executing newly Cole-crafted form Williams clocked 20.73 to lay down the fastest electronic time by a schoolboy prior to a National Boys and Girls Championships. Williams, with two more years left in Class I, completed what is arguably the most commanding sprint performance ever at a Western Championship. Class 4 sprinter Rushane Edwards also copped double sprint titles, taking the 100 and 200m in record times of 11.50 and 22.29 respectively. Keno Dunkley took the Class III weight double with record throws of 44.77 and 12.66 in the discus and shot put respectively.

There were many other record breaking and double title

performances at the Championships. The Orin Gordon coached middle and long distance crew, the Tru-Ds, copped all but three middle distance titles. Giovanni Mowatt won the Class one 1500 and Open 500, Giovannie Foote took the Class one 800m while Herbert Thomas swept the Class II 800 and 1500. Rolando Reid established a new mark in the open Javelin of 51.02m, while Javauri Mitchell set a new Class III 200m record in the semis with 22.59 and followed up with the title on the final day. Munro took both Class I throws through Emmanuel Onyia who had a record heave of 51.10m in the discus and 16.37m in the shot. Waynee Hyman took the Class I 400m in a record time of 47.26. The Steve Cole-crafted hurdlers took most of the hurdle titles. Patrick Campbell took the 110mH/400mH double and Duran Crooks and Brandon Drummond took the quinella in the Class III 100mH.

Back in April 2008 we provided a little insight into the growth strategy for MC Track and Field with a piece titled "MCTF - A Graphical Analysis of Champs". There we not only highlighted the team's performance at the 2008 championships but also broke down what it would take to win one. We have been diligently doing this work since April 2006. Sprint events account for 46% of all possible points to be won at any Championship. In 2006 the sprints were not our strength and we set about changing that as there is no chance to win much less dominate a championship without it. Champs 2010 and the 2011 COCAA Western Champs mark key points in our evolution where we can now say that the sprints have unequivocally become our core strength. The foundation for true championship success is in place.

Congratulations to the entire team, Coaches Harrison, Jones, Cole, Gordon and Powell on lifting yet again another COCAA Western Championship. Congratulations and extra special gratitude must go out to the MC Track Moms our team Physio Karey Lewis, nutritionist Deron Swaby and the school's administration. A special respect and gratitude must also go out to new Principal Mr. Albert Corcho who I can certainly say loves his sports but is a greater fan of discipline. Welcome aboard Sir, we intend to win them all as MCTF continues to grow into a phenomenal family.

A RECORD AND FOUR WINS

STETHS hosted a fantastic meet last Saturday. There were a number of solid performances from the MCTF camp most notably Delano Williams' record run in the Class I 400m. Williams (left) clocked 49.34 to establish a new meet record and set tongues wagging as to whether he'll run the quarter at Champs. Delano was closely followed by team mate Waynee Hyman who was fourth in 50.61. Other podium performances came from:

CENTRAL - ALL ABOUT THE CLOCK

ON TIME AND GREAT TIMES

First let us commend the meet organizers at Central Hurdles and Relays for executing a fantastic event that was run efficiently and to schedule. All went well from the initial entry process to the lightening fast distribution of results.

Speaking of fast, Munro's mile relay team dusted off the cobwebs with a record breaking run to close out the event. The team of Delano Williams (47), Waynee Hyman (49), Rolando Reid (49) and Kaneil Harrison (49) ran easy in the pouring rain to a time of 3:14.61.

Other top three performances on the day came from the Class 3 4x100 who were 1st in 46.13, the 4x800 team that was third overall but first amongst high schools in 8:05.25, Ifeanyi Otuonye who won the Class one long jump with a leap of 6.65m, the Class 2 4x100 who were 2nd in 42.94 and Rosean Maxwell who was second in the U17 400mH with 60.2h. The team next moves onto the 2011 STETHS Grace Invitational, a meet organised by STETHS principal and Munro Old Boy, Keith Wellington.

GOOD TIMES AT KIRKVINE

THOMAS TOPS FIELD AGAIN

MCTF fielded 57 athletes at Kirkvine on January 15th. Unfortunately the meet was rained out before the 400m and distance medley relays were staged. As such many of our athletes will shift their schedule down a week to Central Hurdles and relays on the 22nd. Nevertheless,Kirkvine remains one of the best spectator meets of the season.

Not unlike 2010 the team had well balanced performances all around at Kirkvine. Hard-working Herbert "Kesno" Thomas (left) rose to the top once again clocking the fastest time in the Class 2 800m with 2:05.13. Both Thomas and Jason Lewis (6th; 2:06.54) should put together a strong tandem in the Class 2 mids this season. Other notable 800m performances came from first former Rajiv Lewis (CL 3 - 8th; 2:22.22) and Geovanie Foote (CL 1 - 5th; 2:02.85). In the 200m Munro saw top ten finishes from Rojay Ottey (CL3 - 6th; 23.36), Javauri Mitchell (CL3 - 9th; 23.58), Rushane Edwards (CL3 - 10th; 23.68) and Waynee Hyman (Cl1 - 8th; 21.44). It should be noted that both lewis in the 800m and Edwards in the 200m are actually Class 4 athletes. The team moves onto Central Hurdles and Relays on January 22nd where we will continue the development process and seek qualifying marks in sprint and intermediate hurdles, long jump, 400m, 1500m, 4x100m and 4x400m.

MCTF Opens Season at JC

WILLIAMS AND THOMAS BAG TOP MARKS
MCTF opened up at the 2011 JC/WATA Invitational last Saturday (Jan. 8th). Once again the meet proved to be an excellent platform for getting the motor running.

Delano Williams and Herbert Thomas had top marks in their respective events on the day. The new and improved Williams, who was a finalist for the 2010 Commonwealth Youth Award, clocked 10.36 to win the Class I 100m. Herbert "Kesno" Thomas had the fastest time on the day for the Class II 1500m with a time of 4:25.22 which was almost four seconds faster than second place finisher Dominic Powell of KC in 4:29.08.

FULL SCHOLARSHIPS TO NEBRASKA

IMMEDIATE HUSKER IMPACT

We congratulate MCTF graduate athletes Jodi-Rae Blackwood (Capt., left) and Dexter McKenzie (right) who were both awarded full scholarships to the University of Nebraska in 2010.

Jodi-Rae and Dexter will be pursuing pre-med and architecture degrees respectively. They have both settled in well and have already made an impact on the Husker squad. Jodi-Rae split 48 flat to lead off a record breaking indoor 4x400m team at a Husker inter-squad meet while Dexter leaped 7.31m in the long jump for third place behind reigning NCAA indoor champion Nicholas Gordon (2nd, 7.74m) and All-American Chris Phipps (1st, 7.77m). Both JB and Dex will open up their official indoor season on January 14th at the Holiday Inn Invitational. You can follow their progress on the Husker website.

Gentlemen, your hard work, focus and determination have always been an inspiration to the MCTF family. Train hard and study harder. We wish you all the best for the semester, the season and beyond.

MUNRONIANS GIVE BACK

THE LEGACY IS STRONG

We break from tradition to recognize the achievements and give our appreciation to two former team members who continue to make every effort to support MCTF. We speak of Dr. R Amadeus "Squash" Mason and Mr. Bryan "Lippy" Cummings. Both men are at the top of their respective professions and continue to play an integral role in the sport of track and field.

Dr. Mason (above) is an assistant professor in the Orthopaedics and Family Medicine departments at Emory University in Georgia. He is board certified in Sports Medicine with a special interest in track and field, running injuries and exercise testing. He entered Munro and Coke Farquharson in 1978 and

participated in Track and Field until he left on a scholarship in 1985 to attend Princeton University where he would eventually captain their track team. Dr. Mason received his medical degree from Howard University and completed his Family Practice Residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He is the team physician for USA Track and Field, the Nike/National Scholastic Sports Foundation and Georgia Tech Track and Field. He has also been invited to be a resident physician at the US Olympic Training Center and has been the Chief Medical Officer at multiple USA Track and Field international competitions. You can also look for him on CNN as he is a frequent guest on Fit Nation.

This year Dr. Mason and his family covered all costs associated with housing the Penn Relay team and coaching staff at the Wyndham Garden Hotel. He has pledged to do the same for each year the team makes it to the prestigious event. We thank him and his family for the tremendous gift they have given to the school.

Bryan Cummings (above) attended Munro between 1975 and 1982. As a Dickenson House student he participated and set records in Track and Field his entire time at school and captained the team in his final year. He then went on to the University of the West Indies where he received his degree in History and Social Studies. The long-time hobby photographer joined the Jamaica Observer in 1993 as a freelancer and took the position of Photo Editor for the national daily in 2006. Bryan has won numerous awards from the Press Association of Jamaica and the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission for his work in sports journalism and has travelled the world to shoot every major track and field event including numerous Olympic Games and World Championships. His images have also appeared in a number of global periodicals and television news shows.

In 2009 Bryan arranged a gift from Puma AG to

supply the Munro College Track and Field team with gear for

three years at a value of over J$3M per year. We continue to thank Mr. Cummings and Puma for the tremendous gift they have given the school.

Numerous old boys, parents and friends of Munro College have supported and continue to support the school and the track and field programme. For this we remain truly grateful.

PENN RELAYS 2010: A BITTERSWEET FAREWELL

Blackwood and McKenzie Move on
MCTF entered the 116th running of the Penn Relays with the focused intention of taking home the HSB 4x400m Championship. The sweet: the team of Rolando Reid, Jodi-rae Blackwood, Delano Williams and Dexter McKenzie qualified for the final with the fastest time of the seven hundred plus schools that competed in the event, 3:12.54. The bitter: all appeared well until anchor Dexter McKenzie (above left) revealed he had been suffereing muscle spasms from the last 200m of his carry in the heats. A fact that made his performance, that much more outstanding as he outran none other than 2009 World Championship 400mh fourth place finisher Jehue Gordon (above right). It has never been team practice to run an injured athlete and as such McKenzie was left out of the final line-up which still retained the potency for victory with the inclusion of the prodigous sprint hurdler Patrick Campbell. The bitter continued when team captain Jodi-rae Blackwood started cramping up on the backstretch during his second-leg carry in the final. The team faded to fourth and eventually finished in sixth with a time of 3:19.55. The team ran in the order of Reid-Blackwood-Campbell-Williams for the final.

The sweet: Patrick Campbell took the bronze in the HSB 400mh in a time of 54.27 and was the best performing Jamaican in the event. Sixteen year old, Emmanuel CA Onyia placed fourth in the HSB shot with a heave of 18.82m. Onyia had the best performance of the Jamaican entrants in the event. He had a controversial final throw that looked to be just over 19m. It was called a foot-foul after the head referee decided on the word of the official closest to the circle. Rajae Gayle placed sixth in the HSB discus with a throw of 52.34m. Chad Wright of Calabar won the event with a record throw of 58.50m. Incedentally there were four Jamaicans in the top six as 2nd place finisher Sam Mattis' father is Jamaican, and Michael Cameron of Jamaica College finished third. Myles Chingara finished 11th in the triple jump with a leap of 13.90m. Myles is in fifth form and should have a couple other shots at the title. Wendrico Seymour cleared 1.96m for 9th place and should have another year to set the record straight.

The team next competes at the Jamaica Invitational on Saturday May 1st in the 4x400m relays for High School Boys.

CHAMPS 2010 - THE POSSIBLE IS NOW

NOW LET'S MAKE IT HAPPEN
For years he flew beneath the radar, crossing disciplines and distances with modest success. In 2008 he was named the team's most improved athlete for having made the 400m semi-final at Champs. An achievement that, like all his others, eluded radar detection. Then in 2009 after attempting the event but once he made the Champs 400mH final and placed a respectable fourth. Certainly a performance of that magnitude on a stage such as Champs must have thrust him squarely onto the radar screen? But a year later, his name and reputation remained a stealthly presence.

With 300m to go he already stamped his class on the field, effortlessly leading with the left, then the right as he moved from barrier to barrier. With 100m to go the maroon clad favourite made a surge but could do little to dent his lead and with 15m of track left he looked to heavens, smiled, put his hand to his chest and crossed the line a Champion. Munro College Track and Field respectfully presents, perennial under-dog, Team Captain, Stealth Bomber and Jamaica's 400m hurdles champion from Champs 2010, Mr. Jodi-Rae Blackwood! (above center)

The Captain finished in a personal best time of 51.56 and so did the entire team recording a total of 100.5 points, the highest the school has achieved in a decade. His path to victory fully embodies the experience the team has had over the last few years. Steady progress amidst relative anonymity. Munro College placed 6th for the fourth year in a row at the National Boys and Girls High School Championships and maintained it's lien on the trophy for the best performing rural school. Our point tally has improved from 45 four years ago to 100.5 this year.

Congratulations must go to the Wolmer's Boys School for lifting the Mortimer Geddes trophy 100 years after they won the first Championships. They did it with a team no bigger than ours and no more talented than ours. It with respect that we applaud the efforts of their coaches, teachers, staff and management because they "believed" it was possible and with focus they achieved it.

Munro's only other gold medal came from the defense of the class II 4x100m title (l-r: Cummings, Williams, Harrison, Germain). Having won only one race all season, the team went into the final as underdogs despite returning two from last year's championship team and the '09 class III 100m champion. They ran out of lane one and based on the commentary one would have imagined they were not even in the race. Nevertheless, they quietly made up ground with Cummings on lead-off, Harrison on the back-stretch and Germain on third. By the time the baton got to anchor man Delano Williams the team was in fourth place and 10m behind the leaders from Kingston College. There's not much to say here, except that Delano Williams gunned them down in 41.75 and remains wanted on a charge of triple homicide. The video evidence is below.

Williams also got the school's top medal haul with two silvers (100m, 200m and the 4x100m gold). He's currently on his way to the Carifta Games to represent the Turks and Caicos and we wish him all the best. The other top medalist at the meet for Munro was the irrepressible Adam 'Redz" Cummings, who continues to defy the odds. Cummings took home three medals in the Class II 100m (bronze), long jump (silver) and 4x100m (gold). Redz has never long jumped in a high school championship meet of any kind. In fact, his first jump came at the Youngster Goldsmith meet in February of this year where he popped a 6.52m to qualify for Champs. Someone once said "the long jump is 90% speed and 10% speed". Adam Cummings proved that true on Friday night when he copped the silver with a leap of 7.24m. We're still waiting on him to actually hit the board. By the way, the fifth former, has already passed six (6) CXC subjects with distinctions and will sit a bunch more this June. His performance is a throwback to many legendary Munro athletes who seemed to move effortlessly from book to track to medal stand.

The only other medals came from Emmanuel CA Onyia who took the bronze in the class I shot put with a heave of 16.56m and the mile relay team that took home the bronze with a season's best 3:13:93.

It was a great Champs for the young Munro team (all but three return in 2011) .They saw that with preparation, focus and determination all things are possible. They showed signs of greatness and greater things to come.

We'd like to thank our coaches, Neil Harrison, Steve Cole, Dr. Gwyn Jones and Joe Powell. Our Track Moms, Paula Miller-Foster, Antoinette Davis, Donette Reece, Shelly Brandon, Ivy Lawson and Norma Kerr-Clarke. Special thanks must also go out to our nutritionists Deron Swaby, Denton Smalling and Wilfred Chin; team physios Karey Lewis and Debra Callendar; and physicians Dr. Paul Auden and Dr. Gwyn Jones.

GIBSON 2010: THE QUIET BEFORE THE STORM

FATIGUE SETS IN

For the first time in six years MCTF entered teams in all relay events available for high school boys. There were notable performances from the class II 4x100m (3rd, 42.54), class IV 4x200 (4th, 1:40.13) and the Open 4x400m (4th, 3:17.16). Many of the teams appeared to be fatigued coming off last week's defense of the Western Championships. All can look forward to well needed rest and recuperation before the 100th running of Champs in just over three weeks.

A small number of MCTF team members will compete at Carifta Trials next weekend, March 6 - 7 and at the GC Foster Classic on March 13th.

MCTF THREEPEATS AS WESTERN CHAMPIONS!!!

Munro College won its third consecutive title at the 60th running of the COCAA Western Championships. The sixty-eight man team nabbed 18 gold, 9 silver and 14 bronze medals and scored 409 points to beat second place finisher Herbert Morrison by 131.5 points. The key performance of the meet came from fourth former Emmanuel Oniya (below right) who broke the Class I Shot Put record with a heave of 17.54m (6KG). Oniya has two more years left in Class I. Other outstanding performances came from team captain Jodi-Rae Blackwood who won the open 400mH and the Class I 400m, Rojay Ottey who took the Class IV sprint double, Delano Williams the Class II sprint double and Giovanni Mowatt the Class I middle distance double.

MCTF congratulates coaches Neil Harrison, Dr. Gwyn Jones, Steve Cole and Joseph Powell for putting together another victorious effort for 2010. A very special thanks and congratulations must go out to team nutritionist Chef Swaby, team physio Karey Lewis and team mothers Antoinette Davis, Donnette Reece, Ivy Lawson and our longstanding stalwart Paula Miller-Foster. We would also like to thank Puma and Big Ben Cambio for providing team gear for the 2010 season.

It was a phenomenal championship and we look forward to attempting the Fourpeat in 2011. Complete results can be found in the "2010 Meet Results" section to the right.

MCTF will next compete on Saturday February 27th at the Gibson Relays.

WR 2010: A MONSOON EPIC

THREE WINS THREE RECORDS

Munro closed out the 2010 Milo Western Relays by breaking the mile relay record under the year's heaviest torrential downpour. It was an epic performance on a day when the team set three meet records. The gun sounded with sheets of rain all but removing visibility of the starter and the athletes in the outer lanes. Class II sprinter Delano Williams drove out the blocks from lane 2 and covered three staggers by the 150m mark. and with 200m to go disconnected the field to hand off in 47.1 -> Mile relay veteran Jodirae Blackwood maintained the lead to the last 10m when he was caught by Holmwood's Denton who must have split the better of 46.5 to make the recovery -> Patrick Campbell took the baton from Blackwood, made off like a scared hare and handed over just ahead of Holmwood to Dexter McKenzie (pictured above) on anchor. -> McKenzie and Holmwood's anchor battled down the backstretch until McKenzie let him go ahead at the 200m mark -> With 120m to go McKenzie went by and powered home to claim the victory and the the record in 3:14.86. The picture above captures some of the epic drama.

Dexter McKenzie also had his hand in a second record when earlier in the day he won the Men's Long Jump title with a leap of 7.34m (-0.5w). The third record came from Class I high jumper Wendrico Seymour who won the men's High Jump with a clearance of 2.00m.

Other notable performances came from the Class III 4x100m (2nd, 46.39), the Class IV 4x100m (4th, 48.12) and the Class II 4x200m (2nd, 1:30.05).

Munro next competes at the 60th Annual COCAA Western Championships on February 18th and 20th.

YG 2010: MCTF VAULTS INTO HISTORY

SOARING TO NEW HEIGHTS

Sean Lawson (left) and Nicholi Campbell (below right) made history for Munro College at the 2010 Youngster Goldsmith Meet when both cleared heights in the Pole Vault Open. This was the first time any Munronian executed a successful series of vaults at the National Stadium (previous clearances were at Sabina Park or Race Course). Special commendation must go to their instructor Mr. Orville Brown, the region's preeminent pole vault coach, who continues to offer guidance every weekend.

YG 2010 was also the venue for another prodigal return as Class II athlete Adam Cummings participated in the long jump for the first time at the high school level. Cummings, leaped 6.52m (21' 4 5/8") for second place. Later that evening he opened his 100m season with a 10.84 clocking to not only win the Class II event but also record the fastest schoolboy time of the day.

Other notable MCTF performances came from Emmanuel Oniya in the Class I shot put (4th, 15.51m) and Rajae Gayle in the Class I Discus (6th, 46.10m).

JAMALCO 2010: MCTF sent a split squad to the 2010 running of the JAAA JAMALCO meet. The team won the High School Boys 4x400m in a time of 3:20.90. Congratulations to Messrs. Dennis May and Neville Myton for consistently running one of the most enjoyable meets of the year.

MCTF is scheduled to compete at the 2010 Milo Western Relays at GC Foster on Saturday February 13th.

"We whop dem again" was the cry from an elated House Master, Joseph "Daddy P" Powell (pictured left), after Pearman Calder repeated as Sports Day Champions on February 5th, 2010. PC won by a clear 110 points over runner-up Dickenson and had three of the four class champions.

STETHS 2010: SEVEN GOLD AND ELEVEN MEDALS

MILE RELAY MAVENS
MCTF nabbed six gold and eleven medals at the 2010 STETHS Invitational. The senior mile relay team took the marquis event under the lights in a time of 3:20.71 ahead of new rivals Holmwood Tech in 3:23.13. Other wins came from JodiRae Blackwood in the 400mH Open(55.77), Jevaughn Shaw in the class II discus (47.72), Delano Williams in the Class II 200m (22.08; best time of any class - pictured left), Tevin Wilson in the Class III 200 (24.03), Giovanni Mowatt in the Class I 1500m (4:13.60) and the resolute Myles Chingara in the Triple Jump Open (13.40m). Other medal winning performances came from Wendrico Seymour in the Class I High Jump (2nd, 1.85m), Derron Duncan in the Class III Long Jump (2nd, 5.29m), Rojay Ottey in the Class III 200m (2nd, 24.39; still Class IV), Ahkeim Forbes and Kemar Sutherland in the Class III High Jump (3rd, 1.58m), Patrick Campbell in the 400mH Open (56.59) and Rosean Maxwell in the U17 400mH (3rd, 60.40).

RECORD BREAKING PERFORMANCE AT CENTRAL

TWO WINS AND A RECORD

MCTF produced two wins and a record breaking performance at the 2010 Central Hurdles and Relays Meet held at GC Foster. Jodi-Rae Blackwood took the U20 400mH event in a record time of 54.04 and Patrick Campbell (pictured left) won the U20 110mh in a time of 14.84. Blackwood, still relatively new to the event, (his 5th ever time over the long sticks) showed good promise last year when he clocked 52.65 to place fourth at Champs in his second ever 400mH final.

Other notable performances came from the mile relay "B" team that finished a close second to a Holmwood-based team in a time of 3:17:35. The "B" team ran Dexter McKenzie - Rolando Reid - Kaneil Harrison - Jodirae Blackwood.

MCTF will next Compete at the STETHS Invitaional in Santa Cruz, St. Elizabeth on January 30th.

BALANCED RESULTS AT KIRKVINE 2010

NEW TALENT RISES TO THE TOP
MCTF had two top three finishers at Kirkvine 2010. First year Class II middle distance runner Jason Lewis (pictured left) placed second in the 800m with a time of 2:06:70s and Delano Williams, also in Class II, placed third in the 400m with a time of 51.8s. Other notable performances came from Tevin Wilson in the Class III 400m (5th, 55.50s), Kaneil Harrison in the Class II 400m (5th, 52.20s), Giovanie Mowatt in the Class I 800m (7th, 2:04:10) and Jason Lewis in the Class II 1500m (7th, 4:39:70s).

Jason Lewis and Giovanie Mowatt are late entrants to the sport and have developed particularly well this season. Both Lewis and Mowatt took top ten places at the Western Cross Country Championships this past November. Credit must be given to coach Neil Harrison for reviving the Inter-house Cross County Championship at Munro as both athletes were discovered during the competition.

The senior mile relay team will make its 2010 season debut this weekend when MCTF competes at the 2010 Central Hurdles and Relays Meet on January 23rd at GC Foster College.

A ROCKET START AT JC 2010

HARD OUT THE BLOCKS

Munro got off to a strong start for the track and field season with five winning performances at the 2010 JC Invitational. Record breaking performances by throwers Emmanuel Oniya and Jevaughn Shaw were the key highlights of the meet for MCTF (Oniya is pictured left) . Shaw threw 46.47m to win the class II discus and Oniya's put of 17.45m to win the class I shot also qualifies as the best ever performance in the discipline by a Munro athlete. Other excellent openers came from Delano Williams in the class II 100m (1st, 10.65), Giovanni Mowatt in the class I 1500 (1st, 4:24:06) and Wendrico Seymour in the class I High Jump (1st, 1.90m).

The team will next compete at the JAAA/Puma Development Meet at Kirvine on Saturday the 16th.

MCTF Rules Rural Athletics - Three Consecutive Years

Welcome back to friends, family and team members. We have been the Top Rural Track and Field School in Jamaica for the last three years and our quest towards a national championship continues in the 2009 - 2010 season. Our top team goals are:

Break into the top four at Champs
Three-peat as Western Champions
Win Gold at Penn Relays
Full-Scholarships for Graduating Seniors

This is also our third season online. We took somewhat of a blog sabbatical as most of our communication has been through our MCTF Facebook page which is now over 950 members strong. A special welcome to all those new friends and family.

We would also like to welcome on board this year, Puma AG, the sporting goods company that has signed on to provide our team with gear for the next three years. This relationship was initiated by MCTF parent and past student, Bryan "Lippy" Cummings. A special thank you goes out to Bryan who has been a keen member of the programme for many years.

Our coaching staff remains the same. Head Coach and Sports Department Head, Neil Harrison, leads the charge once again and is superbly supported by Steve Cole ('95) on hurdles / jumps and the institution known as Dr. Gwyn "Bigga" Jones ('84) on field events. Our team captains are graduating senior Jodi-Rae Blackwood (400m, 400mh - U6) and fifth former Rolando Reid (400m). JB was our 07-08 "most improved athlete of the year" and Rolando has won a gold or silver medal at Champs every year that he has participated. Both continue to lead by example and are coaches in their own right.

Our season was kicked off with the inter-house cross country championship that was won by Pearman Calder for the second year in a row (full results are below). PC also won this year's sports day and could quite possibly be ushering in an era of dominance.

Sprinter Adam Cummings will be one of four athletes invited to today's opening press conference for the 6th IAAF World Youth Championships to be held at the Brixen/Brissanone Town Hall in Italy starting at 11:00 am (4:00am Jamaica time).

CUMMINGS... 15-year-old Munro College student will join three other athletes for media presentation

The 15-year-old Munro College student will join American 100m Youth Champion Prezel Hardy, World Junior high jump champion Kimberly Jess of Germany and Italian 100m Youth champion Matteo Didoni at the event that will be attended by the IAAF hierarchy led by president Lamine Diack.

The six-day event will get underway later today with an opening ceremony at the Brixen-Bressanone Sport Arena where the event will be held starting tomorrow.

The 21-member Jamaican team plus coaches and officials were scheduled to arrive in the Italian city on Saturday after a two-day camp in Havana, Cuba.

Tomorrow's opening day will be a busy one for the Jamaicans who will take part in the first round heats of the girls 100m hurdles, the first-round of the boys 800m, the first two rounds of the 100m for boys and girls, the first round of the 400m for boys, the preliminary rounds of the women's high jump as well as the first round of the girls' 400m hurdles.

Jamaica had their best ever medal haul at the 2007 renewal in Ostrava, Czech Republic, when they landed nine medals including two golds from Dexter Lee in the 100m and Ramone McKenzie in the 200m.

PENN RELAYS '09: BEST PERFORMANCE EVER!

HSB 4x100m Championship of America (MC - Ln 9)

On April 18th, less than a week before the start of Penn Relays, at the 2009 UTECH Classic Munro placed 8th in both the sprint and mile relays for High School Boys. That was a blessing. Head Coach, Neil "Juanto" Harrison, set about fixing the glitches the very next afternoon. The sprint relay team was reconfigured to run as Adam Cummings->Rolando Reid->Dexter Mckenzie->Delano Williams. After three days of preparation during a MCTF Pre-Penn Relays Camp at Stadium East the team set off for Philadelphia with glitches fixed.

The results were the best we have ever had at the Penn Relays. The 4x100m team qualified for the Championship of America final after easily winning their heat in a time of 41.82. That was the fourth fastest qualifying time behind Calabar, Wolmers and Herbert Morrison. The final saw a more spirited run from all legs and highlighted Delano Williams holding off reigning World Youth and Junior Champion Dexter Lee for the third place spot (see the video clip above).

The mile relay was were the team felt it could make its greatest impact at the meet as 3:12 or better was definitely in the cards. Munro once again qualified easily for the final with the fourth fastest time of 3:14:78. The team was strategically adjusted to accomodate for the infamous un-staggered line starts at the Penn Relays. Coach Harrison ran O. Reid-Blackwood-McKenzie-R.Reid. The staggered final saw a changed order with Rolando Reid handing to Jodi-Rae Blackwood to Odane Reid to Dexter McKenzie on anchor. I'll let the video speak for itself. The team finished second in 3:13:73 with McKenzie and Blackwood dropping the second and third fastest official splits of the race with 47.22 and 47.40 respectively. After the race the team was disqualified for reasons still truly unknown. An athletes from another school ran within the railing and it is believed that infraction was placed on our team. The video, seen live by millions on ESPN and now by you below clearly shows that no MCTF athlete stepped inside the railing. The protest is continues.

HSB 4x400m Championship of America

In the field events Dexter McKenzie had a best of 7.19m that gave him 5th place in the HSB Long Jump. Omar Bryan (47.32m) and Razzack White (46.07m) placed 12th and 13th respectively in the HSB Discus.

Congrats to all the team members and coaches. A very special thanks must be made to all those that contributed financially and in kind to the team making it to the Penn Relays this year.

ALL-TIME BEST FOR TURKS AND CAICOS

Delano Williams (Turks and Caicos), Angelo Germain (Turks and Caicos), Adam Cummings (Jamaica) and Dr. Gwyn Jones (Jamaica) represented their respective countries well at the 2009 Carifta Games.

Dr. Jones, a former national jumper and thrower (Carifta '82 U17 TJ Gold, SP Silver, DT silver) has performed duties as the National Team Physician on a number of occasions. An orthopedic surgeon, Jones can be found in the Medical Room at every major meet held at the National Stadium.

On the track Angelo Germain, representing Turks and Caicos, and Adam Cummings of Jamaica never progressed beyond the semis in their respective events. The multi-talented Germain clocked 53.42 in the U-17 400m semis and Adam clocked a respectable 10.93 (1.5w) for 5th in his semi-final. Cummings did, however, return to win gold running a scintillating leading-off leg in the U-17 4x100. The team set a new championship record of 40.76.

The lone individual medal in 2009 came from Delano Williams of the Turks and Caicos running a personal best of 21.62 (1.4w) to win a bronze in the U17 200m. The time is not only a national junior record for the Turks and Caicos but also a National all-time best across all ages. Congrats to Delano for having his best season ever to date. Delano also won silver in the Class II 200m final at Champs 2009 (22.29, -0.4w) and gold when he anchored the Class II 4x100m team to victory.

CHAMPS '09: DA 3-PEAT | RELAY GOLD

Through Adversity and Beyond

MCTF rolled into Champs 2009 having made stops at Poxville, Hamstring Town and Flu City. Murphy's Law was hard at work but the team cleared every hurdle and pushed through to maintain sixth position (85 pts.) with a collective sense of purpose and desire.

Young Kaneil Harrison (below right), who just over a month before took the sprint treble at Western Champs, went one-three in the "one-four" double. He clocked 11.10 (-0.2w) in the 100m final and 51.02 in the 400m final. Kaneil became the third consecutive Munro College athlete to win the Class III 100m title at the National Boys and Girls Championships (Rolando Reid '07 and Adam Cummings '08). We are unclear as to whether any other school has ever achieved such a feat but it certainly has not happened in the last twenty five years. Congratulations of no mean order must be made to Kaneil, a self-professed "balla" that only this year seriously showed up for the sport of Track and Field. This young man puts his talent to the test on a daily basis under the guidance of his coach and father Neil Harrison. The development of the Father, Son and Holy Coach triumvirate has been beautiful to watch, with the younger Harrison being as sport smart as he is book smart and athletically gifted (Top 3 in class with an 86 avg.).

In Class II we had three individual medals, Rolando Reid was 2nd in the 400m (48.65 PB), Delano Willams was 2nd in the 200m (21.74, -0.2w PB) and Patrick Campbell was 3rd in the 110mH final (14.33, -1.1w). All three of these young men also ran on the GOLD MEDAL WINNING Class II 4x100m relay team (pic above L-R: Delano Williams, Rolando Reid, Adam Cummings, Patrick Campbell). They were joined by former Class III 100m Champion and record holder, Adam Cummings. The quartet while boasting three 10.8 or better sprinters failed to enter the finals as favourites. That title went to Calabar and St. Jago. After one false start and a starters discretionary "call-back", Adam Cummings rocketed from the blocks and ran a strong turn to hand of even with favourites St. Jago and Calabar. Rolando "Midnight" Reid took the baton and ran what can only be described as a Monsta-Back-Strecth eliminating two athletes staggered ahead and leaving all those staggered behind. Hurdler, Patrick Campbell took the baton in first place and handed over in first place after a Monster run of his own where he displaced many flat event sprinters. At this point it was all over as there was no one on the track that was ever going to catch Delano Williams, who tore up the turf to take the team home in a time of 41.54. No Munro team of any age group has run better in the last five years. This team has gone through a great deal of adversity this season with both Reid and Cummings being out at different times due to injury and that is why we have to give a special "big-up" to the 5th man Gavin-Raye Clarke. Gavin has stepped in all season and was pivotal to getting the team to the final this week. Nuff Respect Gavin!!! See relay video below.

We also had many finalists that gave us points. In the Class III 800m, Levar Dunchie placed fifth with a personal best of 2:06:19. Dunchie won all three middle distance events in record time at this year's Western Champs. In the Class II 100m, first years Delano Williams and Adam Cummings were 4th and 5th respectively in 10.78 and 10.88 (0.0w). Super Soprano Desric Beckford, after yet another year of singing in the school choir and only showing up the day before Champs to pick up a pair of spikes, placed 8th in the Class II Long Jump with a PB of 6.19m. Desric has made the Long Jump final each of the three years that he has come to Champs. First Year II Jevaughn Shaw placed fourth with 43.54m in the discus ahead of team mate Emmanuel Oniya who was 8th with 40.72m. In the Class I throws Team Captain Omar Bryan was sixth in the Discus with 46.49m and 5th in the Shot with 15.60m. In the open Triple Jump Mikhail "Drama" Johns was seventh with 14.25m and Jodi-Rae Blackwood was fourth in the 400mH in a time of 52.65.

Jodi-Rae Blackwood was also integral in the season's best performance for the Open 4x400m relay team. The team of Dexter McKenzie (46.9), Jodi-Rae Blackwood (), Shawnterry Manboard (), and Rolando Reid () clocked 3:15:91 for sixth place.

It was a fulfilling Championship Meet with the school achieving its goal of maintaining sixth position before a move up through to 3rd or 4th. I would like to thank the entire team of athletes, the coaches and medical practitioners Gwyn Jones, Paul Auden and Karey Lewis. Hurdles Coach Steve Cole has worked hard to bring us the first medal in the sprint hurdles in many years. Congrats! Dr. Jones has worked tirelessly as field events coach and medical consultant and has produced results that have been the backbone of the team since the late '80s. Physio-therapist Karey Lewis, nursed many a worn muscle and limb back from the grave this season. We welcome her and look forward to a long relationship. Special thanks must also go out to Guidance Counselor and Cheer Leader #1, Paula Miller-Foster, Coach and Housemaster Joseph Powell and Chef Bill Dennis.

A very special big-up and congrats to returning Head Coach Neil Harrison who brought a great deal of experience and expertise to bear to produce this result through a tumultuous season. Nuff Respect Coach Harrison and welcome back!

MCTF Sends One!

Adam Cummings, 2008 Class III 100m Champion and record holder, came into Carifta Trials having run only one competitive 100m race since March 2008. Many question marks lingered about his level of fitness. These were all laid to rest after the first round when he clocked 11.13 into a 0.9m/s wind. He then moved to the final where he ran 2nd in a new personal best of 10.75. This put him squarely on the 2009 Carifta Team where he will most certainly have sprint relay duties as well.

Other finalists at the meet were:
U-17s - Patrick Campbell in the 100mh (13.92) and 400mH (55.61), Emmanuel Oniya in the Discus (41.56m) and Shot (14.14m), Chadrick Morrison (1.75m) and Myles Chingara in the Triple Jump (12.60m)

and

U-19s - Dexter McKenzie in the LJ (6.73m), Omar Bryan in the Discus (46.72m) and Shot (14.42), Razzack White in the Discus (45.30m) and Rajae Gayle in the Shot (14.95m)

West Champs Fatigue Sets In

MC fielded 4x100m and 4x200m teams in all classes along with an Open 4x400m team. In a day racked with cramps and strains three teams made it to their respective finals; the Class III and II 4x100m and the Open 4x400m. Key Class II sprinter Rolando Reid suffered a strain in the heats of the 4x100m and sat out the remainder of the meet. With Rolando, Dexter McKenzie and Odane Reid nursing injuries, the team pulled out of the 4x400m final.

The Class III 4x100m quartet of Rosean Maxwell, Kaneil Harrison, Tyrone Mollison and Mathew Walcott copped fourth place in their final (44.87). The Class II team of Gavin-Raye Clarke, Adam Cummings, Patrick Campbell and Delano Williams placed 7th in 44.94.

The MCTF highlight of the meet must have been the return of Adam Cummings to active duty after being out for a few weeks with an injury.

MUNRO REPEATS AS WESTERN CHAMPIONS !!!

SWEEPS CLASS III TRACK EVENTS. Munro College dropped the sledge hammer on Western Champs for the second year running defeating its nearest competitor by over 100 points. MCTF student-athletes also had their fair share of records capturing five of the nine that were broken at the 2009 Championship Meet. While full results should arrive later today we can offer a few highlights. Munro won every single track event in class III with two triple winners. Levar Dunchie took the 800, 1500 and 3000 with the latter two being records. Kaneil Harrison took the 100, 200 and 400m titles with the first and last being records. In Class II Rolando Reid and Delano Williams took the quinella by exchanging places in both short sprints, Reid won the 100m and Williams the 200m. Munro also took the quinella in the Class I discus and the Class II shot put.

The highlight of the final day must have been the Class III 4x100m relay final. The team of Rosean Maxwell, Kaneil Harrison, Tyrone Mollison and Mathew Walcott would have entered the final as joint favourites with host St. Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS). Earlier that morning Maxwell (below) won the 100mH in a record time of 14.28. He followed that up with point generating performances in the 200m and 400m. Kaneil Harrison (above) had already won the sprint treble.

At the sound of the gun Maxwell exploded out of the blocks and had an early step on the field. After 5m he, along with everyone at the STETHS Green, realised that he had left the baton in the blocks. Maxwell proceeds to turn back, pick up the baton and attempt to chase the field now 30m ahead (many 14yr olds would have given up right there). Maxwell did well and closed the margin by almost 10m to hand over 20m behind. The Boltian Harrison, at 6' 2" and blazing, grabbed the baton and tore through the field like hellacious knife through scared butter. He closed the gap to 5m and handed over in 3rd place behind STETHS and William Knibb. The diminutive and now clearly inspired Tyron Mollison takes the baton and runs a scorching turn and executes a seamless change in 2nd place with anchorman Mathew Walcott. Walcott just under 5m behind STETHS is, like Mollison, inspired beyond any expectation and also has the run of his life. At 50m to go the STETHS lead is 4m, at 30 it's 3m and 20m it's 1m and then Walcott blasts by STETHS to win by a lean in what had to be the race of the meet. At Munro we have an expression, "Instant Legend"; a term that embodies the lore of the great Munro v Cornwall football matches of the 40s and 50s, blanketed in dense fog and littered with broken bones. An expression reminiscent of feats like Lindy Delapenha's, winning Champs on his own by medaling in eight events. Munro's 2009 Class III 4x100m team created an Instant Legend at Western Champs 2009. They pulled off a miracle, they "never gave up". Credit to all these young men for their heroic feat, but special mention to Maxwell for in the face of shock, surprise and eminent defeat he turned back and picked up the baton.

WEST CHAMPS DAY 1: MONSTER MUNRO LEAD

Munro College leads the 2009 Western Championships by 67 points after day one of the two-day annual championship meet. Munro sits on 188 points ahead of Herbert Morrison's 121 points after a number of field event finals.

Preliminary reports have Emmanuel Oniya (far left) taking the Class II weight double with a record throw of 48.55m in the discus. The other double winner on the day was Class III middle distance man Levorr Dunchie (near left), who took first place in the 1500m and 3000m, both in record times. Dunchie will enter the Class III 800m final with the fastest qualifying time.

MCTF also has at least one finalist in every event, except two, to be contested on the final day.

A more comprehensive report will come when official results arrive.

CHANGES CHANGES CHANGES

Western Relays revealed that there is still work to be done with the stick in the weeks going forward. All 4x100 teams suffered from faulty changes and recorded sub-standard performances. However, the Open Medley and 4x400m events revealed significant positives. The medley highlighted performances from each leg with Clifton Lee and Weynell Williams splitting 23.low on their respective legs. In the 4x400m Rolando Reid and Class III sprinter Kaneil Harrison had PB splits of 48.34 and 51.00 respectively.

The highlight for MCTF must have been Dexter McKenzie's win in the Open Long Jump with a leap of 7.26m on his final jump in the preliminary round (his two previous jumps were fouls).

MIDNIGHT TAKES A DOUBLE AT STETHS

When you have a green carpet for a track, like STETHS does, you're going to attract a few athletes. Last Saturday STETHS hosted a "Champs-like" crowd of participants for its Invitational. Perenially one of the best multi-diciplinary meets for the year, the Invitational suffered from an over population of athletes. The accommodating virtue paid a high price when all the 100m heats finished in just under five hours and resulted in the removal of the 1500m from the schedule.

The surge of interest in the sport has been compounded by a banner Olympic year in 2008. The demand for meets by schools and athletes now far outstrip supply. Most meets this season have attempted to host in a single day the same amount of students and events that Champs hosts over a four day period and Champs is among the largest annual High School Championship meets in the world. At some point the powers that be must realize the math just doesn't work. The development schedule needs more meets and better technology to accommodate the quantum size increases that have occurred over the last four years. With that said, I must commend Keith Wellington and Eldemire Smith of STETHS for weathering the flood.

It is a rare year when a MCTF thrower doesn't have a breakout performance at STETHS. This year Emanuel Onyia and Jevaughn Shaw had personal bests in the Class II Discus. Onyia won with 46.98m and Shaw was 4th with 39.07m. Other highlights on the field came from Dexter McKenzie's 6.98m leap in the Class I Long Jump for the win followed up by a 11.06 clocking in the 100m for 7th place overall. Other MCTF wins came from Kaneil Harrison in the Class III 100m (11.47) and Patrick Campbell in the U-17 400mH (58.47).

However, it was Rolando "Mignight" Reid's performances that stole the meet by winning the Class II 100m in 11.07 and coming back to win the Class I&II Grand Prix 100 in 10.90.

BIG SHOTSKY MEETS THE BIG YORUBA

The Big Shot Invitational, like all "Throwers R Us" meets, was a well-run and enjoyable family affair. MCTF rolled in with a four man strong delegation that saw the return of Nigerian born Emmanuel Onyia (pronounced "un-yah" at Munro). Onyia (left) opened up his final Class II season with a win in the Shot (14.82m) and a 2nd place finish in the Discus (43.70m). He was joined by first year Class II man Jevaughn Shaw who finished 5th in the Discus (38.53m) and 10th in the Shot (11.47m).

In Class I, Razzack White and Rajae Gayle had notable performances in the Discus with 7th (41.58) and 8th (40.88m) place finishes respectively.

In its second year, the Central Hurdles and Relays Meet has fast become a favourite on the MCTF schedule. The meet was not overcrowded, often ran ahead of schedule and was centred by a fitting ceremony honouring the achievements of Olympic gold medallist, Deon Hemmings. Kudos to Jerry Holness and his team.

MCTF fielded a team of thirty student-athletes across the flat hurdles and sprint relays. While there were some excellent performances, overall the times were subdued because of heavy negative winds. Patrick Campbell and Myles Chingara took medal positions in the Class II 110mH and 400mH respectively. Newcomer Jevaughn Jackson took 4th in the Class II 110mH with an impressive run for his second time ever over the sticks. The relay teams also performed well highlighted by the performance of the mile relay squad that finished second in 3:18:83. The team entered as the meet record holders having won last year's inaugural. This year we were led off by National Long Jumper, Dexter Mckenzie (above left) who filled in at the last minute and split 48.2. Rolando Reid took the baton around in 50.9, Jodi-Rae Blackwood in 47.9 and Erroll Davis in 51.2.

RESULTS FROM THE 2009 KIRKVINE MEEET

Munro landed in numbers once again for their second outing of the season. Coaches Harrison and Cole ran a forty two man squad to the 2009 Puma/JAAA Meet in Kirkvine, Manchester. Much thanks must be given to Ms. Smith, Mrs. Miller-Foster and Mr. Powell for their support. The performances on the track were balanced with 11 A and B standard Champs qualifiers respectively.

The team had two first place finshers in the form of Kaneil Harrison (above, Class III 400m, 53.20s) and the Open Mile Relay A Team in 3:29:00s. Other notable performances came from Levarr Dunchie for 2nd in the Class III 800m, Delano Williams (right) for 3rd in the Class II 200m, Jodi-Rae Blackwood for 5th and Rolando Reid for 6th in the Classes I and II 400m respectively. Campbell Takes 110mH Title at JC

MC Track and Field kicked off its 2009 season with a balanced opener at the JC Wata Invitational. Coach Harrison carried 42 athletes that covered most of the events offered on the day. The highlight of the meet was the performance of second year Class II sprinter and Harrison House 4th former, Patrick Campbell (above). Campbell won the 110mH event in a time of 14.90 beating his previous best of 15.27. Also on the track Kaneil Harrison (below left) set a personal best in the Class III 100m by placing third with a time of 11.22 and placed 6th in the 400m with 54.81. Delano Williams was 7th in the Class II 100m with a time of 11.13 and Jodi-Rae Blackwood was 4th in the Class I 400m in 50.28.

In the field events Omar Bryan took second in the Men's Discus (2K) with a throw of 42.30m and set a personal best in the Class I shot with a throw of 15.15m. Chadrick Morrison and Jade Rankine tied for 2nd in the Class II High Jump at 1.75m.

MCTF PROMINENT AT 2008 PRIZE GIVING

MCTF student-athletes were constantly on-stage at this year's Prize Giving ceremony. They have once again proven themselves to be true scholar-athletes by capturing numerous academic and athletic awards. Special mention must be made of Class III thrower Douglas Bowen (below left) who captured the Academic Gold Award for all three terms of the '07 - '08 academic year.

National representatives Rajae Gayle and Rolando Reid captured title awards as well. Rajae won Senior Sportsman of the year and Senior Track and Field Athlete of the year. Rolando Reid was awarded the trophy for Junior Athlete of the Year. Adam Cummings won the award for Junior T&F Athlete of the year in addition to an academic Bronze Award. Class I thrower Razzack White won the award for Senior Basketball Player of the Year. Class III sprinter/Jumper Amin Miller won awards for Junior Hockey and Junior Football Player of the year.

Other MCTF athletes to win academic awards were sprinters Tashane "Champs" Bromfield, Oshane Black and Myles Chingara; distance runners Erroll "Solly" Davis, Justin Johnson and Levar Dunchie; jumpers Adrian Johnson and Desric Beckford; and thrower Emmanuel Oniya.

ATHLETE FEATURE - CHAMPS BROMFIELD

Following on from our first feature we have joint holder of the 2008 Most Improved Athlete of the Year Award, Tashane "Champs" Bromfield.

Champs truly came to prominence in the 07-08 season. He has been a member of the MCTF Squad for the last four seasons but never started in a championship meet until this year. Champs has been among the most consistent student-athletes at training over the last four years. Not only was he always present but worked very hard and was disciplined throughout.

All his work and patience came to fruition during the 2008 STETHS Invitational when he ran 11.1 in the Class II 100m, almost a full second faster than his personal best. Champs went on to run 11.19 in the prelims at Boys Champs and made it to the semis where he ran 11.51. Undaunted by not making the final he came back to run a monster leg in the Class II 4x100m finals.

Champs' story is one of patience, focus and determination. He is the full embodiment of the success that can come through hard work and perseverance through adversity. His aim is to make a final at Boy's Champs 2009. I wouldn't bet against him.

2008 Inter-House Cross Country Champs

November 2008 saw the reintroduction of the Inter-House Cross Country Championships. Coach Harrison designed a new route, combining elements of Plummertown, Chelsea and Mother Blair. It all resulted in a pretty exciting day as this was the first Championships since 2004 and a large percentage of the school's staff participated in its organization and execution. Congrats to Coach Harrison and his team.

Sangster house lifted the Senior (Class I & II) Cup and Pearman Calder the Junior (Class III & IV).

This year's overall and senior winner was Coke House 5th former Erroll Davis. MCTF fans know Erroll as the middle distance double winner at the 2008 Western Championships and a finalist in the Class II 800m and 1500m at Champs. Erroll was also a member of this year's Dacosta Cup Squad (Winger).

Levar Dunchie (right) of Pearman Calder was the Junior winner. Levar represents the school in Track and Field, Football and Cricket and won the Class IV 3000m at the 2008 Western Championships.

UWI SCHOLARS - A QUICK UPDATE

MCTF Scholars on the Move
Cosmo "Spotty" Stevens and Andrene "Petrol" Nelson started on athletic scholarships at UWI this September and are both doing extremely well in the classroom and in training (Petrol has been training since Sept., yeah September!). Cosmo was actually picked to represent the University at the UWI Spec Half Marathon (Trinidad) in October. He finished in 1:23:56.5 which put him 22nd overall, 2nd among UWI Students and 3rd among all University/College entrants. Congrats Spotty!

This year we are going to spend some time introducing you to the members of the squad. We'll start off with joint holder of the 2008 Most Improved Athlete of the Year Award, Jodirae Blackwood.

Jodirae first joined the team in 2006 as a sprint hurdler and made the Class II 110mH final at Western Champs that year. In January 2008 he was asked to run a leg on our 4x400m team at the Central Hurdles and Relay meet. Jodirae surprised everyone but himself when he dropped a sub-50 split and he's been a fixture on the mile relay team since. His best performance in a flat 4 prior to 2008 was no better than 52 seconds, but with hard work and determination he broke through the 50-sec barrier and ran 48.46 (pb) in the 2nd round of the Class I 400m at Champs 2008.

Jodirae plans to make the Champs final in 2009 after missing the finals this year by 1/100th of a second.

New Season | New Coach | New Faces
Here we are again at the beginning of yet another season. Many things have changed and many remain the same. One person that captures both the past and the present is our new coach for the '08-'09 season, Neil Harrison.

Coach Harrison first came to Munro in 1997 and immediately made a huge impact by producing a high calibre mile relay team that won at the Penn Relays that year. He would later guide Munro's mile relay team to two consecutive wins at Gibson and Champs in 1999 and 2000 (see video links below). Under the tenure of Coach Harrison and Head Coach Leroy Allison Munro also won the Western Athletics Championships for six consecutive years until 2003. During this time Coach Harrison earned national recognition as the best Western Regional Coach and was appointed as a National Coach to the Carifta Games from 2001 to 2003.

Coach Harrison is married to wife Karlene (Cindy) and is father to Kaneil and Nekaila.

We are happy to have him back at Munro College and look forward to renewed success at every level.

In what can only be described as the greatest day in Jamaica's Track and Field history we witnessed the most incredible quinella imaginable (a quinfecta really). Shelly-Ann "The Pocket Rocket" Fraser, grabbed and ran away with the women's 100m gold medal only to be followed by her teammates, Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart in a tie for second place.

Fraser clocked a world-leading 10.78 (0.0w) to take the crown as the World's Fastest Woman. This, just 24-hrs after her fellow country-man, Usain Bolt, did the same, by capturing the Men's title in a WR time of 9.69 (0.0w).

It's a great day for Track and Field and an even greater weekend for Jamaica. Jamaican sprinting has grown beyond the comfort-blanket of the "likkle but wi talawah" moniker. We are a Global Sprinting Powerhouse that is, as we speak, dominating the short sprints at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Jamaica is the 800lb Gorilla in the room and it's been a long time in the making.

Nuff Respect must go to all the men and women that came before those who shine today. The pioneers of '48 and '52, Merlene Ottey, Donald Quarrie, Lennox Miller, et al. Nuff Respect to ISSA, the JTA's Primary School, All-Age and Junior High Parish System; Prep School Champs and the JAAA. MCTF TAKES TWO OF THE VERY FIRST AT UWI

Two graduating Munro College Track and Field team members, Cosmo "Spotty" Stephens (Team Captain and Head of Dickenson House) and Andrene "Petrol" Nelson (Head Prefect) have won inaugural track scholarships to the University of the West Indies (UWI). They were acknowledged along with three other scholarship recipients yesterday at a press conference held in the UWI Visitors' Lounge.

Both have been natural leaders throughout their careers at Munro and we have no doubt they will continue to be so at UWI, where Cosmo will pursue a degree in Management Studies and Andrene in International Relations. Spotty and Petrol entered Munro on the same day and have been members of the school's track team since their first year. They developed deep records of accomplishment over the years, particularly at the Western Championships where both have picked up numerous titles in the jumps, middle distance and sprint events.

MCTF is incredibly proud of these young men and congratulate them on their fantastic achievement. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors.

MUNTHROW COLLEGE AGAIN
This past weekend Munro Track and Field sent eight representatives to the National Junior Championships. We came away with three gold, two silver and one bronze, all from the throwing events.

Rajae Gayle (left) continued his fantastic run for the 2008 season with gold medal winning performances and personal bests in the U-17 Shot Put and Discus. Gayle threw 49.85m in the discus and 15.79m in the shot to take the double in the National Championships. This adds to his discus gold and shot put bronze from this year's Carifta Games.

First-year Class II man Emmanuel Oniya (below right) took silver and bronze in the U-17 Shot and Discus respectively with throws of 12.86m and 40.83m. We must also make special mention of our Class III thrower Jevaughn Shaw, who just missed out on the medals with fourth place performances in both events.

In the 17-19 category, Omar "Big Shot" Bryan took the Discus Championship with a throw of 48.42m. This adds to his Penn Relays Discus bronze from earlier this April. Bryan will also compete at the National Senior Championships where he will throw the 2K Discus alongside former MC and National Thrower, Rory Marsh.

Much thanks to Dr. Gwyn Jones for the preparation of the throwers.

Munro College Track and Field performed its last relay event for the 2008 season at the Jamaica International Invitational last night at the National Stadium. We fielded a team of Andrene "Petrol" Nelson, Shawn Manboard, Jodirae Blackwood and Rolando "Midnight" Reid in the High School Boys 4x400m and finished 4th in a time of 3:19:32. We commend the team and coaches on a much improved season and wish them the best for 2009 and beyond.

And now for the thunder. Usain Bolt dropped a 9.76 (1.8w) over 100m last night and squarely captured the hearts and minds of a nationalistic Jamaican crowd. It was a performance that left the casual fan elated and the sport's "intelligencia" awe struck. With Asafa Powell sustaining a disturbing early season injury many were left to believe that a particular US sprinter would canter his way through to the gold medal at the Olympic Games later this August. Young Bolt, 21, has quite possibly put that nervous theory to rest. We sincerely hope that Asafa bounces back to full-fitness to face Bolt at this year's trials and the world in Beijing.

THE MYTH BREAKER

Needless to say that this recent phenomenon bodes well for our national sprint relay team as well. We now have the deepest national pool in years, perhaps ever, with Asafa Powell, Usain Bolt, Michael Frater, Marvin Anderson, Steve Mullings, Nesta Carter, Dwight Thomas, Chris Williams and Clement Campbell all running 10.1x or better. With a group like this one might eschew desire of the August flat final for the one in late June right here at the Stadium. It should be the best National Trials ever.

It was good for the young Munronians to witness such a feat from one of their very own from Western Jamaica. Bolt, the former William Knibb athlete, continues to perpetuate the sport's maxim of "speed begets speed and excellence begets excellence". What the young ones see, the young ones do and will eventually do better. Both Rolando "Midnight" Reid and Adam "Redz" Cummings were in the stadium last night. Reid won last year's Class III 100m final and Cummings this year's in a record time of 10.91. Both should have been duly inspired. On a similar note, Omar Bryan, recent discus bronze medalist at the Penn Relays, performed the role of "Measuring Official" during the shot put event won by national record holder Dorian Scott (20.51m).

Big Bryan Led the Way
Munro College has returned from the 115th Penn Relays Carnival a bit lighter in the medal category than we had hoped for. We did not return empty handed, however, as reigning CAC U-17 Discus Champion and Record Holder, Omar Bryan, took third place in the High School Boys Discus Competition with a throw of 50.48m (165-7). This placed him first among all Jamaican athletes entered in the event. We offer up special congratulations to Omar, his coach Dr. Gwyn Jones and Michael Vassell who helped guide all the Jamaican throwers during the competition in Philadelphia.

We started out well initially on the track. In the 4x100m heat we were ahead by a tremendous distance and were well on our way to a season's beast in the region of 41.5 or better when our anchor man, Moses Watkis, strained his hamstring muscle and bravely limped across the line for 2nd place in a time of 43.51 (click here for video - MC is in Lane 2). While we had no injuries for the 4x400m a lack of focus possibly led to the rather pedestrian time of 3:21:50 almost a full four seconds below our season's best of 3:17:72 (click here for video).

We now move onto a possible lane in this weekend's Jamaica Invitational and then onto the National Junior Trials, which will be held separately from the Seniors this year on June 13th and 14th.

We thank everyone for their support over the year and feel confident that our student-athletes got good exposure as we have had initial inquiries from Norfolk State University and North Carolina A&T University. Omar Bryan is now also on the radar screen of a few colleges as he was the best of the local athletes in the discus.

We must say a "Big Respect" to the Old Boys that made it to the meet: Garfield Comrie (Western Union), Weldon "Perro" Maddan, Damion "Missah C" Campbell, Escoffery "Scaffo" Thomas, "Trouble" Rowe, David Knight, Raymond "Foggy" Farquharson and David "Baddaz" Atkinson. We must also say a big thanks to that indomitable organization, Team Jamaica Bickle (TJB). TJB and its legion of volunteers and sponsors ensured all schools found safe and affordable accommodations along with free transportation and meals. We are reminded during times of crisis of the strength of the Jamaican Spirit and Brotherhood. TJB consistently reaffirms these virtues each and every year and as such they make us more proud to be Jamaican.

We wish them all the best and thank everyone that helped make this trip possible. The guys looked good at the Penn Camp held this past weekend at Stadium East. Second leg man on the mile relay team, Jodi-Rae Blackwood, had the flu and was rested. Other than that all went well with Nelson and Reid clocking 49.1 and 49.4 over 400m in a 90% time trial. Omar Bryan threw for a few hours by the St. Hugh's field with Dr. Jones, Michael Vassell and Rory Marsh. He left with a best of 51.50m that would have put him 5th in last year's competition.

Let's remember that the last time Munro went to the Penn Relays in 2006 we won the 4x100m for High School Boys (Small Schools). Here's the video of that race to refresh your memory.

Class II and Sprints Dominated for Munro in '08
For the last three years we have wrapped up our "Champs" Season with a Team Meeting and small Prize Giving Ceremony where those who have gained points at the National Boys Championships are awarded. This builds on the Annual Bucky Awards that are given out by Dr. Jones each year for field event athletes.

At this meeting we also take time to review and analyze the team's performance at the meet and lay the groundwork for strategy going into the next few seasons. Since we now have the blog we can share some of these highlights with you. We normally meet to discuss strategy in May before final exams and again in September at the beginning of the academic year. I will keep you abreast of these dates as we would like to expand the process and make it more inclusive going forward.

A few integral boundary conditions before you review the charts. At Boys Champs the breakdown of total point potential across event groups looks like this:

This year the tables were turned somewhat in that most of our points were earned in the sprints as seen in the first and second charts (tough to label without HTML). MC Goes to the Penn Relays
We are happy to announce that in 2008 Munro College will be sending a team of eight athletes and two coaches to the 114th running of the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, USA. The school will compete in four events, the 4x100m, the4x400m, the Discus and the Triple Jump for High School Boys. This would not have been possible without the help of numerous Old Boys, the Old Boys Assoc., Friends of MC Track and Field, and the School.

MC Track and Field, through donations from past students and friends has provided eight airline tickets towards the trip and a US$70 stipend to each member of the squad. The school at this point will cover the remaining costs of US$1,500 for the hotel and US$1,000 for the remaining two tickets. Munro Athletes Reap Gold at CARIFTA 2008

MC Duo Strikes Gold

Rajae "Flajah" Gayle and Rolando "Midnight" Reid will each leave St. Kitts with two gold and two bronze medals.

Reid captured his medals as a member of both U-17 relay teams. He received a bronze for his work in the 4x100m and a gold medal for breaking open Jamaica's lead on the 2nd leg of the 4x400m.

Rajae Gayle continues a stellar tradition for Munro throwers at the CARIFTA Games. On the opening day he took the bronze in the U-17 Shot Put with a throw of 14.75m and came back on the final day to take gold in the Discus with a personal best throw of 48.54m.

Congrats to both Rajae and Rolando you have carried the Munro and Jamaica flags high!

Two Years and Two Class III 100m Champions!

The quest to greatness continues. Champs 2008 is now over and it has been our best performance for many years. We are firmly on our way back to prominence and beyond. Before I get to some outstanding details let me thank the coaching staff for a job well done. Head Coach Richard Wilson has brought tremendous energy to the process since last September and has yielded successful results. Coach Cole came over in January after the football season and helped sharpen the hurdlers and senior sprinters. The evergreen Dr. Gwyn Jones guided the jumpers and throwers to a stellar season that gave the entire team the confidence to roll into this meet and move to 6th position from 21st four years ago. Congrats to them all.

Now to the Outstanding results. Class III 100m Champion Adam "Reds" Cummings broke the 6-yr old event record by a full 8/100th of a second. He posted a time of 10.91 in a performance that one could perhaps only see when visualizing "the perfect race". Coming into the final as the projected runner-up Cummings stamped his class within the first five metres by literally stepping on the rest of the field with a rocket start and an instant two metre lead. He moved this lead to almost five metres before the favourite, Bridgeport's Jazeel Murphy, closed slightly with 60 to go. Cummings responded, stepped away and sprinted tall to the finish and the roar of the stadium crowd who seem to have adopted the copper-topped kid on sight. If you've ever been to Champs then you'll know everyone in the stands in an expert analyst. Post race comments rang out from "Big Horse!!! Im likkle but a big horse dat iyah", "mi did ah tell yu a seh a di copper a tek it", "my yute done im from di gun starrr". Well "my yute" is really the son of our own Bryan "Lippy" Cummings who might have visualized this race himself 14-yrs ago when Adam was born. To top it off, Adam was awarded the trophy for "Most Outstanding Male Athlete". Congrats to both Adam and Bryan.

Last year's Class III 100m Champion Rolando "Midnight" Reid was never tipped by the pundits to win in his 1st year of Class II. He missed the title by less than 1/100th of a second in a photo finish that was a throwback to McKenley's 100m in 1952. The photo-meisters deliberated for quite a while and accurately rebuffed an official protest to give Reid a time of 10.83 seconds behind 2nd-yr man Earl Lee's 10.82. Both athlete's will represent Jamaica in this week's Carifta Games. Reid, running from lane 8, emerged from the blocks behind the field and clawed his way back into the medals and what looked like a win by dipping hard at the line. While his head crossed the line before Earl Lee's torso the photo shows his shoulder and chest were only but a very slight sliver away. Reid is a true warrior in every sense of the word. He never gives up and gives it his all in every final that he steps to the line. He also ran from lane 8 in the 200m final and took the bronze there. Congrats Midnight, you're a true leader.

Rajae "Flaja" Gayle, our second Carifta selection, stepped in the ring for the Class II Discus and clutched a bronze medal with his penultimate throw. He took 5th in the Shot Put final.

Congratulations must go out to all three of our medal winners, Rajae Gayle, Adam Cummings and Rolando Reid.

There were other very notable performances that carried us to our 61 point tally. Erroll "Solli" Davis was a double scorer in the Class II 800 and 1500m finals. Davis, who has nursed a hamstring injury for the greater part of the season displayed great valour in putting together two excellent races to take 6th in the 1500m and 4th in the 800m. Davis won the bronze in the Class III 800m in 2006.

The feather-light first year Class II hurdler Patrick Campbell battled a 3.3m/s headwind to take 6th in the 110mH final.

Class I throwers Razzack White and Omar Bryan took 6th in the discus and 5th in the shot respectively. Head Prefect, Andrene Nelson, made the 400mH final but succumbed to a hamstring strain and finished 8th. The Class II sprint relay quartet of Rasheem Eccleston, Tashane "Champs" Bromfield, Patrick Campbell and Rolando Reid, clocked a season's best of 43.01 to finish in 6th place.

All in all MC Track and Field had a very good meet and sit on the threshold of the big five. When the strategy was laid out this is exactly where we were projected to be in 2008. It has come from the support of the school's administration, dedicated past students and hard work and diligence on the part of the students and coaches.

Congrats to the team. Let's support our two Carifta charges this week and those on the move towards the Penn Relays in late April.

Reid and Gayle Earn Spots on National Team

Rolando "Midnight" Reid and Rajae "Flaja" Gayle have made this year's Carifta team as announced in today's Observer.

Reid (photo left) has the distinction of being the first outright sprinter from Munro to make the Carifta team since Franz "Pocco" Bernard and Pete Coley in the late '90s.While Rajae Gayle (photo right) continues a deep tradition of Munro Throwers who have represented the country. From Dr. Gwyn "Bigga"Jones and Dave "Cudjoe" Grant in the '80s, Rory Marsh, Claston Bernard and Sheldon Lewis in the '90s to Omar Bryan as recently as 2006.

We congratulate them both along with the coaching staff. Job well done gentlemen! Carry the flag high!

Munro carried a small group of ten to the trials for this year's Carifta Games which are to be held in St. Kitts, March 22 - 24. Double Western Champs gold medalist and record holder, Rajae Gayle had a good showing in the U-17 shot with a throw of 14.18m for 2nd place. He followed that up with a 4th place finish in the discus with a best throw of 43.36m. Rolando Reid, also in the U-17 category, sped to 10.95 to take 2nd place in the 100m and 22.08 for third in the 200m (Above: Reid dips for 2nd in the 100m).

MC Takes 5 at Gibson 2008

Bodes well for Champs
MC Track and Field arrived at Gibson 2008 still buzzing from the West Champs victory earlier in the week. With a slight injury to Class II double middle-distance winner, Erroll Davis, we were unable to field our 4x800 team which has yet to touch the track this season. However, we were able to field teams in the 4x100m all classes, 4x200m Class II and the 4x400m Open.

We made it to the finals in three events, the 4x100m Class III and II, and the 4x400m Open. All three teams placed fifth in their respective finals. Good word must be mentioned of the incredible lead-off leg run by Adam Cummings that saw him covering the athletes from STETHS and Wolmers in the two lanes ahead of him.

Again, there was a bit of controversy with regards to how we finished in the 4x400m open, but pictures tell no lies. We were given a DNF (did not finish) result but the picture clearly shows that we finished in 5th place (click on picture to see larger image).

All in all we had a very good meet as we haven't performed this well at Gibson for quite a few years. This also bodes well for Boys Champs in three weeks (March 12 - 15).

MUNRO WINS WESTERN CHAMPS 2008

Munro Lifts Title for First Time in Six Years

Western Champs 2008 saw Munro lifting the Boy's title outright for the first time since 2002 (we tied for 1st in '03). The meet was eventful. The first day suffered from the vagaries of tardiness, poor organization and an overall lack of manpower. As a result the best of intentions led to a meet that left a lot to be desired. By now many of you know that Class I athlete Andrene "Petrol" Nelson (above left) had won his heat and was left out of the semi-final on the first day of the competition. After having the coach's official attempt at a protest rebuked on several occasions the senior members of the team sat across the track and stopped the event until a solution was found 20-mins later. Petrol Nelson was properly and officially placed into the semi and proceeded to easily qualify for the final where he came fourth in 50.11s.

The final day also proved eventful as the team bus had difficulties and arrived late. We missed our first race (Class I 110mH) and immediately gave up 14 of our 29 point lead. Shortly after Class III sprint ace Adam Cummings false started and was DQ'd from the 100m final. The dejection was fleeting. As it was Cummings himself that rallied the team back into form by winning the CIII 200m race over the favourite, Demar Levy (Kenroy's nephew) of STETHS.

We had many victories at the meet and featured three double winners in Omar Bryan, Erroll Davis and double record breaker Rajae Gayle:

I'd like to thank all those involved in putting this victory together, it's been a long time coming and the fruit of a lot of hard work by many people mostly unseen. Special thanks must go out to Head Coach Richard Wilson, Coach Cole, Mr. Joe Powell and the tireless Dr. Gwyn Jones who has guided the field event athletes for the greater part of two decades. The field events have been the cornerstone for many years now and it will continue to be of paramount importance in our quest to be successful at the national level.

Congratulations must also be given to the new Headmaster of STETHS, Mr. Keith Wellington (MC Class of '88), for hosting an elegant and efficient final day.

We now move on to the Gibson Relays this Saturday, February 23rd.

Sports Day 2008 proved to be a humdinger in many events. All MCTF athletes performed well on the final day, either winning or placing behind their colleagues. Many discoveries were made on the day including, Shamar Hanson in the Class III sprints and jumps, Ziggy Rochester in the Class I high jump and Romario Lynch in the Class IV jumps.

STETHS 2008 lived up to it's billing. We had strong performances across the board with personal bests set in many events. Our sister school Hampton also used the meet to stage their entrance back into competitive Track and Field. We have welcomed them with open arms as the girls have been training at Munro for the greater part of a month now.

MUNRO GETS SIX "A" QUALIFIERS FOR BOYS CHAMPS

We do not believe Munro has ever missed a year at Kirkvine. 2008 marked the 22nd year the event has been run and it continues to be a favourite among fans and athletes alike. The team achieved 6 "A" standard qualifiers and 5 "B" standard qualifiers.

Again Rolando "Midnight" Reid (above) continued to impress with a very relaxed 22.8 clocking in the CII 200m for 2nd place overall in a time trial format. Adam Cummings recorded 24.0 to finish 2nd in the CIII 200m as well.

MUNRO TRACK AND FIELD OPENS '08 SEASON AT JC

We started our competitive season on January 5th at the JC Pepsi Meet. It was probably our best opener in the last five years as we took three overall first place positions, including two meet records.

In Class III Adam Cummings (left), son of former Munro Class IV 100m record holder Bryan Cummings, got to the tape in 10.9 seconds to take first place overall in a new meet record. First year Class II sprinter Rolando "Midnight" Reid took first place overall in the 400m in a record time of 50.6. Also in Class II Rajae Gayle took second place the discus (1.5kg) with a throw of 43.65m but took first place in the shot with 15.22m.

It should be noted that now veteran thrower Omar Bryan threw the Olympic Weight discus (2kg) 43.00m instead of competing with the boys in Class I.

MC Jumper Wins Scholarship to Jumpsville USA

MALVERN, St Elizabeth - Munro College's Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Junior triple jump champion Seon Powell left the island late last week for the University of Louisville where he accepted a full athletic scholarship.

Powell, who will join a team that includes two of the top horizontal jumpers in the United States and will be coached by the reigning National Jumps Coach of the Year, Jake Jacoby, made a break from a recent tradition.

In the past 10 years or so, a number of Munro past students have made a bee-line for Baton Rouge to attend Louisiana State University (LSU), but Powell said he "wanted to make a change and start a new tradition".

The soft-spoken 6' 4" 195 lbs athlete who was fourth in the triple jump at the Junior Pan-Am Games held in Brazil last year, said while he got a number of offers, Louisville was more attractive given their strong tradition in his specialties.

He said, "I am feeling OK about the scholarship and I have confidence in the coach because he is a good jumps coach. He has been the number one jumps coach in the US for the past two years so I'm pretty confident in his ability."

Andre Black and Tone Belt were NCAA Indoor triple and long jump champions, respectively, and Powell will have them as teammates this season on a team ranked No 5 in NCAA Division I outdoor track and field this year.

Powell, who also had offers from LSU, Texas-San Antonio, Tennessee and Kansas State, has a SAT score of 1,600 from a maximum 2,400 which qualified him for any Division 1 school in the US, and along with his nine CXC passes and seven CAPE subjects, and a personal best of 15.33m in the triple jump and 7.08m in the long jump made him an attraction for many college coaches.

The former Lacovia Primary valedictorian and top GSAT student told the Sunday Observer he plans to study civil engineering.

Dr Kevin 'Gwyn' Jones, who coached Powell in the jumps at Munro, has high hopes for the athlete who also excelled in the classroom, placing first in his class at Munro every year up to fourth form and was on the Principal's Honour Roll and a regular student of the month.

Jones described Powell as "very determined and focused... very unassuming when you talk to him. He is not the type who gets riled up and makes a lot of noise, but he works hard at his craft and is very dedicated at what he does, which is a good thing".

Jones, also a Munro Old Boy, said he left Powell to make the choice of schools and did not try to lead him in any direction.
